LGBTiQ Advocates Learning Workshop Series by Change Lab PH

Change Lab will conduct this series of learning workshops to pilot-test the curriculum of a Basic LGBTIQ Advocates’ Training Course. “Change Lab” is a new working group of educators and advocates who would like to contribute to the empowerment of LGBTiQ advocates in the country.

The course designer and over-all facilitator is John Andrew G. Evangelista, Instructor, Department of Sociology, CSSP, UP Diliman.

Overview: This “course” is a series of lectures and workshops containing basic concepts and perspectives on gender and sexuality. With an intersectional lens, the course explores the contours of how gender and sexuality are constructed and how those gender and sexual constructs are constantly interrogated, engaged and reconfigured. It focuses on the LGBT +++ movement as one of the major social forces constantly challenging orthodox understanding of gender and sexuality. While the course’s perspective carries a global approach, it zeroes into the local discourse on gender and sexuality The course is designed for LGBT activists to better their understanding of their role as bearers of the movement.

The course is divided into four (4) sections for its pilot run. The first section explores the process of socially constructing gender and sexuality. The second part discusses various theoretical frameworks and perspectives in gender and sexuality studies. The next section maps the different important legal routes of movement strategies. Finally, the last section critically narrates the history of LGBT movements. Notice that the first two sections of this course are dedicated in understanding how society constructs gender and sexuality. The last two sections focus on the ways these sexual and gender constructs are reconstituted in the context of the LGBT movement. The sequence of topics is organized to clearly orient activists/participants about the nature of their role as part of the LGBT movement which constantly engages the traditional construction of gender and sexuality.
